Malaysia is rolling out an ambitious artificial intelligence training initiative designed to reach 100,000 young people between the ages of 18 and 30, positioning the country to adapt its workforce to the realities of an increasingly automated and digitally-driven employment landscape. Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan framed the programme as a critical intervention, warning that without intervention, Malaysian talent risks falling behind as global economic patterns shift toward technology-intensive sectors. The initiative forms part of a broader set of economic measures announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, set to commence on September 1.

The emergence of artificial intelligence and automation is no longer a distant concern for Malaysia's labour market—these technologies are actively reshaping how employers recruit, train, and deploy workers across industries today. Rather than treating AI as a future consideration, the government has chosen to treat it as an immediate challenge requiring direct action. By extending access to AI technology among young demographics, the administration is attempting to ensure that career entrants possess the competencies employers increasingly demand, whether in data analysis, digital innovation, or emerging fields yet to fully materialise.

Under the scheme, participating youths who successfully complete designated training modules will receive complimentary three-month subscriptions to various AI applications, removing financial barriers that might otherwise exclude lower-income participants. This subsidised access model reflects an understanding that genuine digital inclusion cannot rely solely on voluntary uptake or market mechanisms—direct government support is essential to democratise technological literacy across socioeconomic groups. The practical effect is to lower entry costs for young Malaysians seeking to develop career-relevant expertise in one of the most consequential technological domains.

The AI for the People Programme builds upon existing government initiatives, including the MyMahir AI Roadshow, which has already delivered free training to over 22,000 Malaysians through funding administered by Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad. That earlier initiative drew nearly RM110 million in allocation, demonstrating sustained commitment to AI workforce development. By layering the new programme atop existing schemes, the government signals continuity in strategy while attempting to achieve substantially greater scale and reach among the youth cohort.

Ramanan emphasised that the programme reflects a deliberate policy choice to ensure Malaysia's economic gains translate into tangible improvements in workers' lived experiences. He highlighted the diversity of beneficiaries targeted by the broader economic measures—encompassing gig workers, self-employed individuals, small traders, hawkers, home-based income earners, and wage workers across income bands. This inclusive framing suggests the administration views technological upskilling not merely as an economic imperative, but as an equity issue, where citizens of varying socioeconomic backgrounds deserve equivalent opportunities to participate in and benefit from digital transformation.
