Yet this apparent digital confidence masks a more complex reality. The IDEMIA study, which draws on the expertise of a global firm specialising in biometrics, cryptography and digital security solutions, reveals that consumer confidence has fractured significantly over the past five years. More than half of those surveyed—53 percent—report feeling considerably more vulnerable to online threats than they did five years ago. This psychological shift reflects genuine changes in the threat environment, as cyberattacks have become more sophisticated, more frequent, and more targeted at everyday users rather than just large institutions.

The anxiety is widespread and multifaceted. An overwhelming 87 percent of respondents expressed concern about fraudulent activities perpetrated through digital channels, while 91 percent worry specifically about the unauthorized theft of their personal data when engaging with online services. While quantum technology remains largely theoretical for most Malaysians, with only a minority claiming to understand it clearly, those familiar with the concept have grasped its profound implications. Approximately 83 percent of respondents with quantum computing knowledge already view it as a potential cybersecurity threat.
