A former educator in Singapore has been handed a two-year custodial sentence after he was convicted of systematically grooming a young female student and engaging in inappropriate physical contact with her over an extended period. The 41-year-old man, who qualified as a full-fledged teacher in 2014 and taught design and technology classes, faced three counts of indecent acts with a child and one count of sexual grooming. Deputy Principal District Judge Ong Chin Rhu found him guilty on all charges on Thursday, July 23. The identities of both the offender and the school remain protected under a gag order designed to shield the victim's privacy.
The predatory behaviour began in 2022 when the man first established contact with the victim, who was between 13 and 14 years old at the time. Their initial interactions occurred ostensibly for academic purposes in the school's design and technology studio, where they discussed coursework. However, the nature of their relationship quickly evolved beyond the classroom environment. The teacher began providing unsolicited mathematics tutoring despite not teaching that subject, effectively creating additional opportunities for private interaction and deepening the relationship. This pattern of conduct is characteristic of grooming behaviour, whereby an adult systematically builds trust and isolation with a minor to facilitate abuse.
Communication between the two extended far beyond school hours, primarily through WhatsApp messaging that frequently occurred after 6:30pm. The exchanges became increasingly intimate in tone. The student, influenced by the teacher's status and attention, began addressing him as "daddy" and "dearest daddy," terminology the teacher actively encouraged by responding with corresponding terms of endearment such as "dearest daughter." This psychological manipulation—establishing a pseudo-parental dynamic—served to blur boundaries between appropriate teacher-student relationships and something far more sinister. The prosecutors established that the teacher was fully aware of the inappropriateness of this conduct.
Physical contact escalated in parallel with the emotional manipulation. Between September and November 2022, the pair met privately at least five times, during which the teacher embraced the student and kissed her cheeks. In one particularly troubling incident within the design and technology room, he instructed her to sit on his lap. While the student reported feeling uncomfortable, she complied with his instructions. Once seated, he stroked her stomach with his thumb for approximately one minute and hugged her repeatedly, kissing her forehead and cheeks. During this contact, he made a deeply disturbing personal revelation, telling her that he had not engaged in sexual relations with his wife for two years—a statement clearly designed to justify his inappropriate behaviour and further isolate the victim emotionally.
The teacher's attempts to conceal his actions intensified after receiving a warning from his subject head in mid-November 2022, which explicitly flagged that it was inappropriate for the student to address him as "daddy." Rather than ceasing the misconduct, he doubled down on concealment tactics. He instructed the student to delete all photographs and messages they had exchanged, and subsequently shifted their communications to Instagram's "vanishing mode" feature, which automatically prevents screenshots and recordings of messages—a deliberate choice indicating consciousness of guilt and an attempt to eliminate evidence.
The physical contact continued unabated despite these warnings and measures. On November 28, 2022, the teacher rented a car and repeated the behaviour, kissing the student while she was inside the vehicle. By January 2023, meetings had progressed to a secluded alley behind the school hall, where further physical contact occurred. The student, now deeply conditioned by months of grooming, reciprocated his affections, kissing him on the cheeks and responding to declarations of love with her own—a tragic illustration of how grooming erodes a young person's ability to recognise abuse.
The psychological damage inflicted on the victim became evident when the teacher abruptly withdrew from the relationship in May 2023. Rather than maintaining his earlier expressions of affection, he began treating her with deliberate cruelty, calling her "mentally ill," describing her as demanding, and actively avoiding her in school corridors. The student testified that this sudden abandonment devastated her emotionally, manifesting in a precipitous decline in her academic performance. The victim only discovered that the teacher had begun targeting another female student when she encountered evidence of similar conduct. This discovery appears to have catalysed the report to school authorities.
Two female students, now understanding the predatory pattern, jointly approached the school principal with allegations of the teacher's misconduct. This courageous action triggered investigations that led to his arrest and formal charges in 2024. The defence counsel, Kalaithasan Karuppaya, subsequently disclosed that his client had resigned from his teaching position in March following an earlier suspension, effectively ending an educational career built on the systematic abuse of institutional trust and student vulnerability.
This case carries broader implications for educational safeguarding across Southeast Asia. The teacher exploited multiple institutional vulnerabilities: the inherent power imbalance between educators and students, the private nature of design and technology classes, and the accessibility afforded by digital communication platforms. Educational institutions across the region must implement robust monitoring of private communications, enforce clear boundaries on student-teacher interactions outside classroom settings, and establish cultures where students feel empowered to report suspicious behaviour without fear. The courage displayed by these students in reporting the teacher, despite months of psychological manipulation, underscores the critical importance of comprehensive consent and safeguarding education for young people.
